Oprah Winfrey on Precious: Don't Expect to "Enjoy" It

Director Lee Daniels insists he never thought that his new movie, Precious, would have much success.

In fact, he never even thought it would be released in theaters.

"I thought it was going to go straight to DVD," Daniels told me last night at Precious' AFI Fest 2009 presented by Audi premiere in Hollywood. "I mean, who was going to want to see a movie about an obese black girl learning how to read?"

But then he got a call from Oprah Winfrey…

Star Trek's Uhura: Ready To Take Her Shirt Off Again

Beam us up, Scotty!

Zoe Saldana says she's onboard to start filming the sequel to this summer's blockbuster megahit Star Trek.

"We're working on it," Saldana, who plays Uhura in director J.J. Abrams' revived sci-fi franchise, tells me. "They were calling to see where we were going to be and how my schedule is next year."

She smiled, "Just that was worth me doing a cartwheel when I got the phone call because I cannot wait to put on the suit and go back to the Enterprise, take my shirt off and be with all those yummy guys."

Office's John Krasinski Moonlights as Sundance Kid

Romancing Pam hasn't been the only activity keeping Jim busy after hours.

Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, the writing-directing debut of The Office star John Krasinski, has been announced as one of the 64 films screening in competition next month at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

The dark comedy about a scorned anthropology student's quest to figure out why her latest boyfriend dumped her, based on a book by the late David Foster Wallace, reunites Krasinski with his former small-screen love interest Rashida Jones and also stars Timothy Hutton and Julianne Nicholson.

Like the rest of next year's competition lineup, Brief Interviews will have its world premiere at Sundance.
