Zooey Deschanel proved to be a tough act to follow.

A night after The New Girl star hit it out of the park, Demi Lovato sang the national anthem to kick off Game 5 of the 2011 World Series tonight at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, wearing a red Texas-T-shirt under her jacket.

Did the Dallas-born pop star similarly rise to the occasion?

Well, Deschanel squashed any preconceived notions about the power of her voice, revealing that her quirky She & Him recordings are resting on a booming set of pipes.

But Lovato has already shown with tunes like "Skyscraper" that she favors the big ballads, and her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was no exception.

The 19-year-old attacked the national anthem with everything she had and almost nailed all of it, getting a bit shrieky at "land of the free" but totally redeeming herself with "home of the brave."
