The Avengers has taken out The Hunger Games.

The Marvel team-up movie grossed another $8.5 million domestically Tuesday, and formally became the year's No. 1 box-office hit.

Next stop: $400 million.

The fanboy epic could hit that mark as soon as Thursday, its 14th day in theaters.

Currently, The Dark Knight holds the record for taking the speediest path to $400 million: 18 days.

Through Tuesday, The Avengers was at $389.5 million overall domestically.

The total put Iron Man & Co. ahead of The Hunger Games, which was a surprise mega-blockbuster having grossed about $387 million stateside.

As of now, The Avengers is the 13th highest-grossing movie of all-time domestically, its studio said. At the pace it's going, it could challenge the original Star Wars for fifth place in the rankings as soon as Sunday.

Worldwide, The Avengers is running even hotter.

The Joss Whedon film has pushed past Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace and Johnny Depp's Alice in Wonderland, its studio reported, to crack the all-time global top 10, with a grand sum of $1.036 billion.

And that, boys and girls, is why Robert Downey Jr. gets paid the big bucks.
