David Tennant is returning to the world of Doctor Who. Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-2010, will reprise the role alongside fan-favorite Catherine Tate as Donna Noble for a series of audio plays for Big Finish.

"I still remember the sense of joy I had when I heard that David had been asked to play the Doctor," Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery said in a statement. "We were all so pleased for him—as we knew how much Doctor Who meant to him. And now David comes full circle, back doing Doctor Who with Big Finish—except that this time he's playing the Doctor! It's the same but different—it's wonderful to have him back!"

The first audio special, Doctor Who—The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Technophobia, is set in London in the near future and humans are slowly losing the ability to use technology. The second play, Doctor Who—The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Time Reaver, visit an entirely mechanical planet filled with scoundrels. The third play, Doctor Who—The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Death and the Queen, sees Donna meet the man of her dreams in a the land of Goritania, but the Doctor has never heard of Goritania.

Matt Fitton wrote the first play, Jenny T. Colgan the second and James Gross the third. Nicholas Briggs directed and executive produced the specials.

"I love working with Catherine because of the life she brings to something and the way she can turn the most mundane line into something glorious and sparkling," Tennant said in a video released along with the news of the specials.

The plays have a 2016 release date set.

Tennant last returned to Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary special. Next up he can be seen in Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix as the villain Kilgrave. Tate, known to US audiences for her work on The Office, has been busy overseas with roles in SuperBob, Not Sophie's Choice and The Vote.
