Matt Damon's new movie looks out of this world—literally and figuratively.

20th Century Fox released a new trailer for The Martian Wednesday, giving fans a closer look at what happens when, during a manned mission to Mars, a fierce storm hits and astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead. Though Mark survives, his crew has left him behind. Somehow, he must find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Meanwhile, NASA and a team of international scientists are working trying to bring "the Martian" home, and Mark's crew plots a daring rescue mission.

Ridley Scott directed the movie, adapted from Andy Weir's best-selling novel. In addition to Damon, the star-studded film features Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Michael Peña and Kristen Wiig.

The Martian will be released Oct. 2 in 2D and 3D.

While promoting the movie in California Tuesday, Damon joked to E! News that his brother would be more equipped to survive on the red planet and called his own survival skills "horrendous." The actor also said his daughters are "into science," which made this project particularly interesting. Speaking of his family, E! News' Erin Lim reminded him that it's been nearly a decade since he married Luciana Bozán Barroso—but don't think Damon forgot! "That's in December, so I've got to get cracking on figuring out something. Ten years!" he marveled. "She's hung in there with me for 10 years. She deserves like a medal or something."

"It was funny. The other day we were leaving the gym and some guy with a video camera came running up and he goes, 'Your 10-year anniversary!' We looked at each other and we went, 'No, that's not until December.' Then we get in the car and he goes, 'What's the secret to a long relationship?' I was like, 'Remembering when my anniversary is!'" he said. "I think that's one of the keys: knowing the big dates."
