It takes a lot of makeup to look that ugly!

Fox's new hit drama Sleepy Hollow, which brings Washington Irving's classic story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to life and a 16th century Ichabod Crane to 2013, is all about the supernatural fun, and last night's outing, "Blood Moon," told "the story of this witch, she was burned 250 years ago," breakout star Tom Mison says. And being burned at the stake means charred skin, which means a whole lot of visual effects.

We're taking you exclusively behind the scenes of last night's witchy hour of Sleepy Hollow, which featured some pretty stellar visual effects. In the clip, director and executive producer Ken Olin reveals how "complicated" it is to shoot the sometimes crazy but always fun new series...

"The show is complicated because in every scene there's either visual effects, makeup effects, stunts, or sometimes we have all of them," Olin explains. "We want our stunts to enhance scenes, not to create scenes."

And last night's episode was a combination of all three! "This witch has been burned to a crisp, so we're using a full body prosthetic. All of these pieces are applied and cover her entire body," Olin details. "That probably takes four and a half hours."

The drama, which also stars Nicole Beharie and Orlando Jones, has proven to be one of the fall season's breakout shows. The premiere brought in 10.1 million viewers and a 3.5 demo rating, which is Fox's best fall debut in seven years.

Sleepy Hollow airs Monday at 9 p.m. on Fox.
